Gone To Pot
Deb Henry, Mary Bartholomew & Kristi O’Connell

These three potters became acquainted several years ago at a pottery class held at Knoxville Arts and Fine Crafts Center. After spending many studio hours together, they realized that although they each have different and unique styles, their work very much compliments the others’. These three women are very inspired by world around them, which is clearly visible in the art they create.

Deb, Mary and Kristi utilize the same mediums in their work, but each of their personalities is truly reflected in their respective pieces. Deb loves to embellish her work, giving each piece a special unique touch; Mary tends to create functional pieces that are more simplistic in style, but with a creative twist; and Kristi creates bright, colorful pieces with a touch of whimsy.

The three are accomplished in wheel thrown pottery and hand-built clay work, and they spend many hours in their home studios as well as larger studios in the Knoxville area. The clay bodies and glazes they use on functional pieces are oven, microwave and dishwasher safe.  Pieces may become bowls, mugs, platters or serving bowls.  Others develop into brie bakers, home decor pieces and wine bottle decorations.  A popular and recent addition  to their product line is what Deb calls "Serenity Faces" pendants, each different and unique.

Creation of pottery is a slow process, both time and labor intensive, requiring multiple steps and waiting times.  As their business expands, they strive to create unique and original works of art.  "Pottery is never ending education," says Mary.  However, they all seem to agree that working with pottery is "centering" in an otherwise hectic world.  As only a true artisan would feel, Mary smiles as she says, "The best part of this endeavor is watching the faces of customers or friends that find delight in our creations".

"blessing" that pottery has brought their way is the many wonderful people that have touched their lives and are now called family. Working with clay brought about a special friendship for these three potters, and they can’t think of a better way to spend their spare time than “playing in the mud.”
